Day 1:Marrakech ➝ High Atlas Mountains ➝ Ait Ben Haddou ➝ Ouarzazate ➝ Dades Valley

Depart early from Marrakech and drive south, crossing the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260m), winding through remote valleys dotted with ancient kasbahs. Upon arrival, visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Ben Haddou, a beautiful ancient fortified village made of earthen clay that has served as the backdrop for many famous films, including Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Stroll through the kasbah’s winding lanes and learn about its rich history.

Then, drive to Ouarzazate, known as “The Hollywood of Africa,” where you can visit the Taourirt Kasbah, once one of the residences of the Glaoui family. Next, continue through the lush Skoura Oasis, a valley filled with palm trees and kasbahs, before heading into the stunning Dades Valley, famous for its purplish mountains and winding roads. Overnight in a charming local guesthouse or traditional kasbah with beautiful views over the valley.

Dades Valley ➝ Todra Gorges ➝ Erfoud – Merzouga ➝ Camel Trek ➝ Desert Camp

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before driving toward the Dades Valley, following its river as it winds through rugged rock formations famously nicknamed the “Monkey Fingers.” Continue on to the Todra Gorge, a spectacular canyon over 300 meters high. Take a short loop walk down to the river within the gorge and capture photos of this impressive panorama. Then set off for Merzouga, passing desert towns such as Tinjdad and Erfoud along the way. Erfoud is well known for its vast fossils and dates.

Arrive in Merzouga, the gateway to the Sahara Desert and home to the stunning Erg Chebbi dunes. Embark on a relaxing camel ride across the golden dunes at sunset, watching the sky fill with vibrant colors. In the evening, enjoy a sumptuous dinner accompanied by Berber music at a luxury desert camp. Overnight at the camp under the stars.

⇒ Day 3: Merzouga – Desert Discovery Tour – Local Culture

Wake up early to watch the sun rise over the magical Sahara dunes. After breakfast at the camp, embark on an exciting 4×4 desert safari. Visit Khamlia village, home to the Gnawa people, and experience their spiritual music, traditional lifestyle, and dances. Next, meet some local nomadic families living in traditional tents and learn about their desert customs and way of life.

Discover the M’Fis dinosaur fossil mines, where ancient marine fossils dating back millions of years have been found. Then, visit Dayet Srji, a seasonal lake that attracts migratory birds, and relax in the peaceful oasis. You can either take a nap or return to your hotel or camp in Merzouga. If you still have energy, enjoy an optional camel ride or try sandboarding on the dunes.

Day 4: Merzouga ➝ Ziz Valley ➝ Midelt

Your trip begins as you leave Merzouga, heading northwest through the lush Ziz Valley, famous for its miles of palm trees lining a beautiful river canyon. Take a break here to capture photos and enjoy brief strolls around this green oasis in the desert landscape. Midelt, a small mountain town nestled between the Ayachi Mountains at an elevation of 1,488 meters above sea level, is the perfect spot to stop for lunch. In the afternoon, continue your drive through the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, known for their cool climate and diverse wildlife. Keep an eye out for Barbary apes playing in the trees. Overnight in Midelt or at a nearby hotel surrounded by the fresh mountain air.

Day 5: Midelt ➝ Cedar Forest ➝ Ifrane ➝ Fes

Depart for Fes via Azrou and Ifrane, two Berber villages nestled in the Middle Atlas Mountains. Along the way, drive through the cedar forests where you may spot Barbary apes. If time permits, explore some forest trails or visit a local market. Next, stop in Ifrane, often called “Little Switzerland” because of its clean, leafy streets, Alpine-style buildings, and European atmosphere. Finally, arrive in Fes the spiritual and cultural capital of Morocco. Check into a beautifully restored riad within the ancient medina.
